Secure Sockets Layer

Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL, is a protocol that is used to transmit private information across the Internet. SSL uses a combination of public-key and symmetric-key encryption to ensure that data remains confidential. In order for an SSL connection to be established, a server must first generate a certificate and send it to the client. The client then verifies the certificate and creates an encrypted connection.

SSL is commonly used in text analytics applications in order to protect sensitive information such as credit card numbers or social security numbers. In some cases, SSL may also be used to authenticate users or to encrypt communications between different components of a text analytics system.

Outside of the text analytics industry?

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a protocol for enabling data encryption on the Internet and for helping website users verify the identity of the sites they are connecting to. SSL is most commonly used on web pages that require users to enter sensitive information, such as credit card numbers or personal information. When you connect to a website that uses SSL, your browser checks the site’s security certificate to make sure it is legitimate. If everything checks out, your browser then creates an encrypted connection with the website. This means that any information you enter on the website – including your credit card number – will be encrypted before it is sent over the Internet.

One common use of SSL outside of the text analytics industry is in online shopping. When you make a purchase on an online store, you will typically see a lock icon in your browser’s address bar. This indicates that the website is using SSL to protect your information.

Another common use of SSL is in email. Many email providers, such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail, use SSL to encrypt emails between their servers and your computer. This helps to protect your messages from being read by anyone other than the intended recipient.
